Project Story

The Kirkwood Community Center was originally constructed as a theater and gymnasium in 1966. Multiple building additions and renovations have been completed over the years, most significantly including a new gymnasium addition in 1991 and another facility expansion and ice rink enclosure in 1998.

Due to aging facilities and the need for modernization of space and systems, the City of Kirkwood engaged Christner for a renovation project that includes interior renovations and infrastructure improvements, along with the addition of an exterior canopy at the main building entry.

The Work

Creating a distinctive arrival experience was one of the main goals of the project. The addition of an exterior canopy as well as strategic renovations to the lobby create a welcoming space for patrons and visitors. A new lobby desk bends to create a gracious connection to the skate rental area and provides clear lines of sight. The fireplace becomes a focal point for the entry area and feature walls also add interest and identity for the arrival experience.

Upgrades to the East and West Gyms will also be made to improve acoustical performance, and infrastructure improvements will include new HVAC, fire alarm systems, and security upgrades. Renovations to the meeting rooms and kitchens on the 2nd and 3rd floors are also included in the project.
