Support for combined inpatient and outpatient services
Project Story
Washington University Medical Center is currently in the midst of a 10-year Campus Renewal project that will transform the campus experience through major renovations and new construction. During phase one of the project, Christner was responsible for programming and design of the new procedural floor that includes operating suites and imaging services to support 182 new beds on the North Campus of the medical center.
We designed 12 operating rooms and five interventional radiology rooms, with associated support services, including pre/post op beds. Through collaborative workshops with departmental representatives, our healthcare planners focused on features of the layout that improve the patient experience, right-size each service, support improved workflows, and consolidate functions that can be effectively shared.

The Work
Typical operating rooms in the new tower are 645 square feet, with universal layouts of booms for equipment, anesthesia, utilities, lights, and monitors. Three robot operating rooms are sized at 840 square feet to accommodate surgical robots, surgeon’s consoles, flex space, and robot “parking.”
Christner’s work also included design of a new Central Sterile Processing Department and new Frozen Section Lab to serve the Barnes-Jewish Hospital North Campus (including adult inpatient, women's and infants, and children’s hospitals).
We also planned and designed the imaging services renovation to occupy vacated space. It includes seven MRIs and seven CTs with associated patient waiting, registration and support spaces.
