THE WORK
The layout of the existing facility (which includes two linear accelerators and is adjacent to an outpatient surgery center) presented a number of challenges in delivering an integrated and welcoming treatment center. The solution is a combination of gut renovation and new construction, with new separate entrances for patients, staff, and emergency access.
The design focuses on clarity of patient flow with dispersed waiting rooms to serve exam, treatment, and infusion areas. Lab and pharmacy areas are integrated into the circulation path. Design features such as abundant natural light, views to nature, welcoming family respite spaces, and uncongested registration areas help to ease stress, clarify wayfinding, and support a calming experience. Finishes and casework build on BJC HealthCare’s standards for cancer care in creating an environment of warmth and simplicity, with patient choices for privacy or community.
Services Provided
Working with the Christner team was extraordinarily collaborative in helping us create a lovely, patient-friendly space for those undergoing cancer treatment. Through many iterations, together we developed a plan that allows us to respectfully meet the needs of our patients and families for years to come.
